He stares at me, smiling, unaware of the volcano erupting within me. These intimate sessions mutilate my sense of independence; in this murdered church of my body, every molecule is a screaming prisoner.
Summary:
Nelah seems to have it all: wealth, fame, a husband, and a child on the way. But in a body her husband controls via microchip and the tailspin of a loveless marriage, her hopes and dreams come to a devastating halt. A drug-fueled night of celebration ends in a hit-and-run. To dodge a sentencing in a society that favors men, Nelah and her side-piece, Janith Koshal, finish the victim off and bury the body.
But the secret claws its way into Nelah’s life from the grave. As her victim’s vengeful ghost begins exacting a bloody revenge on everyone Nelah holds dear, she’ll have to unravel her society’s terrible secrets to stop those in power, and become a monster unlike any other to quench the ghost’s violent thirst.
My Thoughts:
Womb City didn’t quite live up to the hype I had built up for it in my soul. Had I not hyped this book up to myself, I would have enjoyed it so much more. Crazy how we can do that to ourselves.
The story is complex. I listened to Womb City over the course of a few days, and thats how I would recommend anyone do it. If you take long breaks you will forget what is going on. Womb City is a wild dystopian thrillerquise science fiction story.
In a world where immortality can be achieved through body hopping some individuals, mostly women, are micro chipped and tracked. This advancement is pitched as a way to combat crime and sinful behavior, but in reality, the use of this technology infrenjes on the right of the individuals. Make too many mistakes, have too many obscure thoughts, your consciousness will be removed and the body recycled to a new consciousness.
Whew, so that is going on. Nelah is haunted by a ghost that leads her to discover secrets of her society. Nelah is always plotting around her husband who is plotting around her, their relationship is complex. By the end, I couldn’t multitask, I was just listening to Womb City come to a close.
I wanted to enjoy Womb City more than I did, but something about the writing style was hard for me to get through. I think Tlotlo Tsamaase has a bright future and I look forward to see what else they publish.
Should You Read Womb City?
Womb City is the perfect read for someone who frequents science fiction, I do not read science fiction often but still liked the themes presented. You should check it out if you enjoy science fiction and women’s rights.
