Looking up at these eyes, I’m gripped by this stomach-sinking, gut-twisting, throat-constricting dread. Was I bitten by a fucking werewolf?
Summary:
Rory Morris isn’t thrilled to be moving back to her hometown, even if it is temporary. There are bad memories there. But her twin sister, Scarlett, is pregnant, estranged from the baby’s father, and needs support, so Rory returns to the place she thought she’d put in her rearview. After a night out at a bar where she runs into Ian, an old almost-flame, she hits a large animal with her car. And when she gets out to investigate, she’s attacked.
Rory survives, miraculously, but life begins to look and feel different. She’s unnaturally strong, with an aversion to silver—and suddenly the moon has her in its thrall. She’s changing into someone else—something else, maybe even a monster. But does that mean she’s putting those close to her in danger? Or is embracing the wildness inside of her the key to acceptance?
This darkly comedic love story is a brilliantly layered portrait of trauma, rage, and vulnerability.
My Thoughts:
I read Such Sharp Teeth over a rainy weekend camping trip, which helped to create the perfect atmosphere. A few chapters in, I knew I was going to read everything by Harrison’s writing style. It was an immediate love, similar to my experience with T. Kingfisher.
I am not a huge werewolf reader. Harrison swayed away from the trendy mates/alpha/beta tropes. Without those elements, Harrison crafted a suspenseful, thrilling, drama, comedy, romance that I was not expecting to love as much as I did.
I went grocery shopping and bought a family-sized portion of pulled pork, roast beef, and multiple rotisserie chickens. Werewolf snacks.
Harrison flushed out all of her characters. I was shocked by the reveal of Rory’s childhood, her complex relationship with her mother, the strain this all puts on her sister, all while Rory struggles with werewolfism. AND when you think wow Rory really has had so much growth, her sister also is just as developed. 10/10 for character development for me.
There is a romance between Rory and another character, as mentioned above, this is not a stereotypical werewolf romance. It feels very normal.
I like to think of Such Sharp Teeth as a cozy werewolf thriller.
“Just be careful,” I whisper. “I have such sharp teeth.”
Should You Read Such Sharp Teeth?
Yes! Even more so if you do not like to read horror and looking for something to get you in the mood for the spooky season.
