I know, everyone has always seen the movie. And while I love Miyazaki films in general, the whole story and characterization was changed around from the book and people don’t usually understand my disappointment with that.

Yes!! I did watch the movie before reading and was very disappointed once I read the book. I do still like the movie but I consider it roughly based on the book.
