Book Review: The Dead Take the Train by Cassandra Khaw

Summary:

Julie Crews is a coked-up, burnt-out thirty-something who packs a lot of magic into her small body. She’s been trying to establish herself in the NYC magic scene, and she’ll work the most gruesome gigs to claw her way to the top.

Julie is desperate for a quick career boost to break the dead-end grind, but her pleas draw the attention of an eldritch god who is hungry for revenge. Her power grab sets off a deadly chain of events that puts her closest friends – and the entire world – directly in the path of annihilation.

The first explosive adventure in the Carrion City Duology, The Dead Take the A Train fuses Khaw’s cosmic horror and Kadrey’s gritty fantasy into a full-throttle thrill ride straight into New York’s magical underbelly.

My Thoughts:

I am bummed to say I did not finish The Dead Take A Train. It is my first DNF of 2024. Cassandra Khaw and I are a hit and miss match. I enjoyed Nothing But Blackened Teeth, so I was excited to jump into her new release The Dead Take the Train.

In short, the story was a little too slow for me. It is pitched as a cosmic horror. Other cosmic horror’s catch my attention pretty quickly. The Dead Take the A Train simply did not. As of right now, I plan to circle back to The Dead Take A Train when I go camping this summer.

Have you read The Dead Take A Train? What did you think?

I’m a big Richard Kadrey fan and especially love his “Sandman Slim” novels. “The Dead Take the A Train” failed to delight to the point that I don’t think I got much past the first few chapters. There just wasn’t enough there to grab me. I can’t put my finger on it because my time reading it was so brief, but it just seemed to miss the “wow factor” that I had expected.
