Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Hands down, Howl’s Moving Castle is one of my favorite books. It is apart of a series and the other books are fun but not as great as the first one. Diana Wynne Jones herself, is an amazing author. If you haven’t read any of her titles you need to add her to your reading list!
I am so thankful for the Studio Ghilib movie Howl’s Moving Castle that lead me back to the book! I had no idea Howl’s Moving Castle was a book. For whatever reason I watched all of the credits and saw it was based off a book. My heart exploded. As I hunted down the book I also found a copy of The Neverending Story, which at the time I also didn’t know was a book. I know, what rock did I live under?
The characters in Howl’s Moving Castle are lovable. Sophie is cursed to be trapped in an old lady’s body. Howl is an overly-emotional-man-child-wizard who has trapped himself in a web of lies. Calcifer is trapped in a deal. There are more character you’ll love, but those are the big three. I can’t say more, I will spoil the whole story. Read it!
Why am I thankful for this book? It is so magical. I fell in love with all of the characters. It is rare I read something and like everyone. Normally there is one or two character I can’t stand I want to black out their dialogue with a marker and make my own edition of the story, but not with this read. If you haven’t read this magical story please do! Howl’s Moving Castle feels and reads very much like a fairy tale because it is a hodgepodge of fairy tail tropes we all love. It is a fun girlhood tale that everyone need to give a chance.

I read a few of Diana Wynne Jones’ books when I was younger but never discovered this one. Maybe some day I’ll read it 🙂
