A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon
Camilla Creams, our main character of this children’s book, likes lima beans. She is teased for liking lima beans, she is so embarrassed she says she won’t eat them anymore. She is a little to worried about what others think of her. Due to her emotional dilemma she breaks out with a bad case of stripes. Literally, her skin is no longer skin tone it is striped like a tee shirt. This morphs into a very strange illness caused by Camilla trying to change who she is because of peer pressure.
I felt a special connection with Camilla Creams because I too like lima beans. I love this picture book so much! My mom and I read very often together when I was a child. I not only enjoyed the illustrations I loved the message. Be who you are! Don’t change! It is important for kids to understand it is okay to be true to themselves.
If you haven’t read this silly book, please do. I am forever thankful for the fond memories this book has brought me and the message. If you would like to listen to the story you may do so here.
Have you read this silly book? Do you plan to? What reads are you thankful for?
